Severe Winter Weather impact

Published on Thursday 1 March 2018

All schools are closed in Angus today due to the continuing weather conditions.

We continue to monitor the situation and any updates abut schools and school transport will be available on our Weather Watch page on Twitter  Due to school closures all school lets are cancelled today.

Look out for information later this afternoon which will confirm our position for tomorrow in relation to schools and school transport.

Margo Williamson, Angus Council Chief Executive said: “I am tremendously proud of all our staff and partner agencies for the work they are carrying out to try to ensure services are running as smoothly as possible in this adverse weather. There is still work to do. Our planning and preparation for the days to come is continues during this severe weather spell.”

Wintry weather

Gritters and ploughs have been out since 5am again today working hard to keep the county’s priority routes clear as a Met Office Amber weather warning for Angus remains in place. There are challenges in certain areas being created by drifting snow and we would ask people to consider whether their journey is absolutely necessary and where possible follow Police Scotland’s advice not to travel.

Our ploughs and gritters are at work across Angus as numerous roads have been affected by the severe weather. Updates about affected roads can be found on our Weather Watch page. Snow showers will continue to blow in on an easterly wind, with further snow showers through this evening and tonight amid freezing temperatures. Forecasts indicate that gusts of up to 40mph will continue until the weekend. That, combined with snow showers, means that roads will continue to be affected by snow drifts.

Our waste collection teams are experiencing significant difficulties in carrying out collections today, but are attempting to do so wherever possible.

While they were able to complete the majority of rounds yesterday, with some disruption to normal service, today’s wind, snow and freezing conditions are proving even more difficult. It is likely there will be a large number of bins that are not collected today.

If your bin is due for collection today but has not been by 3pm, please take your bin back in. Where any collection is missed householders can leave a reasonable number of bags next to their purple bin on their next scheduled general waste bin collection day. Only waste properly secured in bags will be uplifted. Bags cannot be accepted with the mixed recycling bin – please use a recycling centre where and when possible. Staff at our recycling centres are working hard to keep them open and safe. However Kirriemuir recycling centre has closed again today, Arbroath has been closed for the day and, given the forecast, there is a possibility centres will have to close at short notice for safety reasons. Essential trips only please.

Apologies for any inconvenience but we hope you understand that due to the ongoing severe weather, these are circumstances beyond our control.
