We are providing more glass recycling points in areas that people regularly go to, including supermarkets, leisure centres, car parks and village halls.
In Arbroath, most of the new glass recycling points will be in place by Monday 3 June.
Glass recycling bins will be in place in Monifieth, Carnoustie and surrounding villages in time for residents to use when they get their new blue bins.
Why we are changing the way we collect glass
We are changing the way we collect glass to improve the quality of recycling, meet our responsibilities and save money.
Glass which is collected along with other materials is often broken up into smaller pieces during the sorting process. It ends up being re-used just once, sometimes as aggregate for building, or lost altogether. Collecting glass separately from other materials makes it easier to sort and recycle into bottles and jars, over and over again.
The Charter and Code of Practice (CoP) on household recycling, agreed by Scottish Government, requires councils to collect glass separately from all other materials. It is expected this code will become mandatory in future.
Introducing separate household bins and collections for glass would be very expensive. So instead, we're greatly increasing the number of glass collection points. This is in line with the way neighbouring authorities collect glass. Collecting glass separately will provide us with income instead of us paying for it to be sorted out from other materials.
