Register to vote

In order to vote you must be registered. 

You can register to vote if you are:

  • 16 or over in England and Wales (although you can’t vote at present until you’re 18), or 14 or over in Scotland (although you can't vote in local government elections and the Scottish Parliament election until you are 16 or in UK elections until you are 18)
  • a British, Irish or EU citizen living in the UK
  • a Commonwealth citizen who has permission to enter or stay in the UK or who does not require such permission
  • a foreign national who has permission to enter or stay in the UK or who does not require such permission not subject to any legal incapacity to vote

You can register online on the register to vote website. You will need your national insurance number.


Voting age in Scotland lowered to 16 

The voting age for Scottish elections has been permanently lowered to 16.

The Scottish Elections (Reduction of Voting Age) Act enables 16 and 17 year olds in Scotland to vote at Scottish elections.

You won’t be able to vote at UK Parliament elections until you are 18.
