Voter ID

Voters in Scotland now need to show photo ID to vote in person at a polling station at UK parliamentary elections.

Most people already have valid photo ID  Please see below for accepted forms of ID.  If you do not have an accepted form of ID, you can apply for a Voter Authority Certificate online via the Electoral Commission website.  The deadline for applications is Wednesday 26 June 2024.

Accepted forms of photo ID

You can use any of the following accepted forms of ID when voting. You only need to show one form of photo ID but this must be the original, photocopies are not acceptable.

Acceptable documents include:

  • Passport issued by
    • UK
    • any Channel Islands
    • Isle of Man
    • a British Overseas Territory
    • EEA state
    • Commonwealth country (including an Irish Passport Card)
  • Driving licence (including provisional licence) issued by
    • UK
    • any of the Channel Islands
    • Isle of Man
    • EEA state
  • Blue badge
  • National Entitlement Card (concessionary travel card)
  • identity card with PASS mark for example Young Scot Card
  • biometric immigration document
  • Ministry of Defence Form 90 (defence identity card)

You can still use your photo ID even if it is out-of-date, as long as the photo still looks like you. Your name on your ID must be the same name you used to register to vote.
