2023 UCI Cycling World Championships

Published on Thursday 13 July 2023

The 2023 UCI Cycling World Championships Gran Fondo Time Trials will take place in Angus and Dundee on Monday 7 August.

The Gran Fondo Time Trials event will see international elite amateur competitors race a distance of just over 14 miles, against the clock, along the A92 westbound carriageway in Angus.

The event village will be based at the Michelin Scotland Innovation Parc in Dundee’s Baldovie Road. This is where competitors will register and ride out from, and it will include a fan zone and exhibition area.

As you’ll see from the race map, the course of just over 14 miles will extend from the top of West Grange Road and out along the A92 westbound carriageway as far as Salmond’s Muir, which is two miles north-east of Carnoustie and four miles west of Arbroath.

From there, the riders will turn and head back towards Dundee – again on the westbound carriageway.

There will be spectator zones close by the start and finish lines at the top of West Grange Road and marshals will be in place along the route.

The spectator zones are free to attend. They can be accessed on foot or by bike from West Grange Road, or by using the footpath that runs alongside the A92 westbound carriageway.

To stage the event safely, road closures and diversions will be in place.

The westbound (Arbroath to Dundee) carriageway will be closed to all other traffic from the Elliot Roundabout to just after the West Grange Roundabout (before the Panmurefield Roundabout).

This closure will be in place from 8pm on Sunday 6 August to 10pm on Monday 7 August.

The eastbound (Dundee to Arbroath) carriageway will remain open, with traffic management in place as appropriate.

A temporary traffic management order will be in place and further details of local diversions will be published soon. These will be supported by relevant diversion signs around the time of the event.

We’ll provide details of those diversions here as well as any changes to public transport as a result of the event.

In the lead up to the time trials, event partners have provided direct communication through a letter drop and have put signage in place along the route advising of the likely impact during the event.

Road closure information will be updated on this website in the lead up to the event, as well as on the Grand Fondo community webpages.

If you have any specific questions about the event and the impact it may have, please contact event organisers by email at community@granfondoworlds.com

In the run up to and during the event, there will be impacts associated with the event across Scotland. This could include changes to the normal operation of the roads network, transport and services.

An online Business Guide is available, where businesses can find advice on planning and maintaining operations during the event; how to inform staff and customers of any service changes; and ways to get involved and show your support of the #PowerOfTheBike.

In the first event of its kind, the world’s greatest riders will come together across Scotland to compete at the highest level - the first country in the world to host such an event.

The biggest cycling event in history, it brings together 13 existing individual cycling world championships into one mega-event.

It will feature 13 UCI World Championships, including BMX Freestyle Flatland; BMX Freestyle Park; BMX Racing; Gran Fondo; Indoor Cycling; Mountain Bike Cross-country; Mountain Bike Downhill; Mountain Bike Marathon; Para-cycling Road; Para-cycling Track; Road; Track; and Trials.

With events taking place all over Scotland, Angus and Dundee host the Gran Fondo Time Trials on Monday 7 August 2023.

Gran Fondo (which translates as “Big Race”) is a long-distance, mass participation event that celebrates competitive cycling, with the top 25% percent of riders from 27 qualifying events held around the world being invited to compete in Scotland as part of the 2023 UCI Cycling World Championships.

The Time Trials see riders of varying ages and abilities take on a beautiful but challenging course. The seriously fast cyclists will be competing for medals, while everyone else is hoping to beat their personal best.
