The Scottish Book Trust has awarded seven Angus early years providers with the first Early Years Reading Awards in Scotland.

Airlie, Hayshead, Ladyloan, Murroes and Newtyle nursery classes, Inverbrothock playgroup and Small World Nursery were selected to be part of an exciting pilot project to trial the new accreditation programme, showing their commitment to building a culture of reading.

Research proves that reading for pleasure has positive impacts on learners’ attainment across the curriculum, supporting wellbeing, critical thinking, creativity, empathy and resilience. Each setting has celebrated their achievement in a variety of ways involving the children and families.

Convenor of Family Education and Justice, Cllr Lynne Devine said:

“I’m incredibly proud to acknowledge the hard work and dedication of both the children and staff in our early learning and childcare settings who have achieved the Scottish Book Trust’s Early Years Reading Awards.

“By encouraging our wee ones to read for fun, we are not only supporting a lifelong passion for reading which is the basis for all learning but also making a significant impact on academic attainment. Well done to everyone involved.”

Clare Fulton from The Scottish Book Trust visited the early learning and childcare settings to hand out their awards.
