Dead and dying seabirds

Published on Friday 14 July 2023

Dead and dying seabirds have been washing up along the East Coast of Scotland in recent days, including Angus beaches and shorefronts.

This is believed to be because of an outbreak of Avian (or bird) flu.

Wild birds can carry several diseases that are infectious to people.

When outbreaks of avian flu are confirmed or suspected, it is important to follow this advice –

  • Do not touch or pick up sick wild birds
  • Keep pets/dogs away from any dead or sick birds
  • Don't feed wild waterfowl
  • Don't touch wild bird feathers or surfaces contaminated with wild bird droppings
  • If you keep poultry or other birds, wash your hands and clean and disinfect your footwear before tending to your birds

You can report dead wild birds to the Animal and Health Plant Agency (APHA) online or by phoning 03459 33 55 77

By doing so, you can help them to understand how diseases are spreading.

If you find a live but sick bird, you can call the SSPCA on 03000 999 999.

There is more information on avian influenza on the Scottish Government webpages.
