Welcome to Angus: information for guests from Ukraine

There are seven towns in Angus, each with its own unique character and attractions: Arbroath, Brechin, Carnoustie, Forfar, Kirriemuir, Monifieth and Montrose.

This beautiful county has excellent road and rail links and is within easy reach of Scotland’s main cities. 

With large farming areas, Angus has welcomed seasonal workers and tourists from other countries for years and communities are well integrated offering a warm welcome to everyone.

Employment opportunities 

Someone from one of our teams will be happy to meet with you to discuss your employment needs and support you to find suitable employment, education or training. We recognise this is an important part of resettlement and there are expert staff are here to help.   

We are responsive to the needs of all our residents and will deliver programmes designed to meet the needs of guests and employers. For example, we are currently running a project that delivers ESOL classes for 8 weeks followed by access to employment in our health and social care sector.   

Schools and education 

There are 51 primary schools and 8 secondary schools in Angus and each town has a high school/senior school and a cluster of primary schools. The schools follow the Curriculum for Excellence for children aged three to 18.  

There are nurseries in each town offering early years provision.  

Dundee & Angus College has an excellent campus based in Arbroath offering a range of learning opportunities including English for Speakers of other Languages (ESOL).  There are also two universities in nearby Dundee. 

Accommodation 

We have a range of accommodation opportunities ranging from family living with local hosts who can help support guests to find their way around the area and connect with essential services. They can also help you find social activities to improve your enjoyment and quality of life.  

We also have opportunities within our social rented sector. There are several properties available in the city of Brechin and others regularly being identified for families from Ukraine from Angus Council and other registered social landlords. Our resettlement team would be happy to give you more information.   

Help with English – ESOL 

As well as formal classes at college, we offer a range of ESOL classes with our friendly tutors helping you improve your English, whatever level you are at. 

Transport 

Angus has a good public bus transport system. There are frequent buses to Dundee and other Angus towns. 

There are railway stations in Montrose, Arbroath, Carnoustie and Monifieth with regional train services to the east coast of Scotland, Aberdeen, Dundee, Edinburgh, Perth and Glasgow, whilst intercity services operate to destinations in England such as Newcastle, Birmingham, York and London. 

Things to do in Angus 

Angus has a wonderful range of activities for all ages including cycle paths, heritage sites, entertainment and offers an outstanding range of food produced locally.   

There are a range of supermarkets across the towns and each has a rage of local shops, cafes and other services.

There are many local sports clubs and groups, most towns have a local football club and swimming pool. There are many renowned golf courses across Angus.

Meeting local people and others from Ukraine 

We have many people from Ukraine living all over Angus, wherever you go you will be near to many friendly locals and other people from Ukraine either living in their own accommodation or living with one of our friendly host families.   

There are also a wide range of community activities across the towns including walking groups, community cafes, digital skills and many more.    

Places of worship 

There are churches across most towns and villages in Angus and there are also many places of worship in nearby Dundee.
