What to do if you want to get married or register a civil partnership in Angus.

Documents to submit in advance

There are forms you must complete before you can get married or enter into a civil partnership.

This applies to both civil and religious/belief ceremonies.

Documentation must be submitted in person at a scheduled appointment.

Who should attend the appointment

Only one of you needs to attend the appointment, as long as you bring:

  • both sets of signed and dated forms
  • both sets of supporting documents

You can both attend the appointment if you wish.

What to bring to the appointment

  • A completed form for each party signed in ballpoint pen:
  • A fee of £100. This applies to both civil and religious/belief ceremonies. Payment is by card only.
  • A completed celebrant and witness details form
  • Birth certificates
  • Proof of nationality. Everyone getting married needs to prove their nationality and produce a passport.
  • People born in the UK before 1983 obtained British citizenship automatically. If you were born in the UK after 1 January 1983, your nationality depends on the nationality of your parents. If you do not have a passport and were born after 1 January 1983 you will need to prove your nationality in another way and produce a birth certificate from a parent showing that they were born in the UK.
  • Proof of address. For example: utility bill, driving licence, recent Council Tax or bank statement.

If any of the following apply, bring these as well:

  • Certificate of Divorce, Dissolution or Annulment. If you have been married or in a registered civil partnership and your marriage or civil partnership has been dissolved a decree of divorce granted outside Scotland must be Final and Absolute. A Decree Nisi is not acceptable.
  • Death Certificate of your former spouse if you are widowed.
  • If your domicile is outwith the UK, a Certificate of No Impediment (CONI) issued by the competent authority to the effect that you are free to marry. It is your responsibility to ensure that your marriage in Scotland will be recognised in your country of domicile. If any certificate you provide is not in English, you should also produce a certified translation.
  • If you come from an EU country and have settled in the UK, or if your passport is not British, you must complete a Declaration of Status of Non-UK Nationals Form and provide a share code to enable us to check your settled or pre-settled status.

Making your appointment

If you have contacted us already to arrange a civil marriage ceremony in Angus, we will contact you at the appropriate time to schedule your appointment.

For religious/belief based (Humanist) marriages taking place within Angus, send us your contact details using the Marriage Notice Appointment form.

We will then contact you as soon as possible to arrange an appointment.

All office visits are by appointment only. Please don’t travel to one of our offices without a pre-arranged appointment.

We will only accept emailed documentation in exceptional circumstances. If you cannot attend an in-person appointment, for example because of the distance between your home address and Angus, let us know.

When the appointment should take place

Notices must be submitted early enough to enable us to confirm that you are free to marry or enter into a civil partnership.

Ideally, you should submit your notices about eight weeks before the marriage ceremony / civil partnership registration or ceremony.

The minimum period of notice is 29 days before the date of the proposed marriage/civil partnership. If you fail to give 28 days’ clear notice, you may need to postpone your marriage / civil partnership.

Only in exceptional circumstances will the Registrar General authorise a marriage to take place if 28 days clear notice has not been given.

Marriage Notice / Civil Partnership Forms are only valid for three months from the date they have been signed and must cover the wedding date.
