Storm Babet update (as at 8.30pm): The latest modelling from @SEPA is that river levels on the South Esk could reach an unprecedented 5m above normal levels. The Brechin flood defences are designed to deal with river levels of 3.8m. This means that there is a serious risk to life from excessive flooding.

As of 5.30pm today the following roads in Angus are confirmed as being closed due to Storm Babet - B9128 road between Craichie & Hillend. C12 road between Fowlis Village Hall and the junction with the A923 Coupar Angus to Dundee road. A92 Lower Northwater Bridge (on bridge only) north of Montrose.

Over the past few days, resilience colleagues have been working with SEPA to identify areas at most risk of flooding, due to the unprecedented level of rain that is expected to fall across Angus. SEPA have advised of a possible sever flood warning.

As a result of the severe weather alerts, our roads teams have been actively deploying sandbags to resilience groups and around vulnerable areas and buildings. This is to redirect flows and protect properties at risk.

We are advised by the Met Office and SEPA that Storm Babet, will bring very challenging conditions for Angus, particularly North Angus, with river levels already high and unprecedented levels of rainfall expected. This is the first red rain warning since 2015, accompanied by an amber warning for wind from the east.

The 2023 UCI Cycling World Championships Gran Fondo Time Trials will take place in Angus and Dundee on Monday 7 August. The Gran Fondo Time Trials event will see international elite amateur competitors race a distance of just over 14 miles, against the clock, along the A92 westbound carriageway in Angus.
