Doing your own repairs and alterations

Under no circumstances do your own repairs.

You must get permission before making any alterations or improvements to your council house including:

  • any work involving electrics
  • any work involving gas
  • any work which involves changing fixtures and fittings

Ask permission to carry out the work using our online form.

Standard decorating, such as scraping wallpaper or painting, does not need permission.

If you carry out improvements to your property such as getting a new kitchen fitted, we will not normally assume maintenance responsibility.
